Leiter Jobs Thread

Now that the hiring season is winding down, I compared this year's jobs thread with last year's. This year, so far, we have 94 listings. Last year's thread contained about 122 by this time. Some listings list more than one job, and I did not go through and count each one. And because of the Rusty Jones Affair, there are likely some hirings that did not get posted this year. But this seems pretty bad. On the other hand, 2008's thread had a total of 110, 107 by this time. But '07's had 154 and just over 140 by this time.

What is "the Rusty Jones affair"?

Don't you mean Rustigate? I thought we agreed on that....

I'm in favor of "Rustypocalypse."

As of the most recent instantiation of Leiter's thread, he's allowing placement directors to post now.

Rustigeddon.

I know of at least one job (which I didn't get) that hasn't been posted up there. I'm eagerly waiting to find out how big a loser I am by seeing who they did hire.

A rather significant number of the postings look to me to be post docs. Anyone got stats on how the TT:postdoc ratio compares to previous years?

Is this the guy from Oklahoma who got hired by Harvard?

Jonestown II?

I know at least two jobs that haven't been posted. Both are TTs at SLACs.

Also, several of the posts on the Leiter thread are duplicates - the candidate added a post and then later on the placement director added a post with the candidate as one of many receiving jobs.

I haven't been following Leiter's thread recently, but North Florida made two TT hires, Concordia in SoCal made a TT hire, and I don't think either are up there.

Let's not get caught up in creating fun names for what was just an overeager (and no doubt very proud) placement director. Rusty's my hero.

From what I heard, "Rustigate" was in fact a very innocent affair - the posting announcing his job at The Big H was withdrawn only for some pro forma, paperworky reasons, and no one involved was ever reprimanded or rebuked for anything involved in the whole mess.

On another topic, though, I'm curious as to how many jobs the thread has missed - I know of at least two hires at genuine universities, one TT, that aren't listed. So I'm wondering how many people *really* landed jobs this year.

word verification: dized. I'm totally starting a meme with this word, watch me.

Without getting into specifics, I just want to confirm Anon 4:48's basic take on the "affair", and confirm that we have a fantastic placement director at OU. He was no small help in my job search.

In addition to our fantastic placement director, we landed at least one other TT job this year (on our dept. website for the curious) that I didn't see during a quick scan of the Leiter thread.

Thanks for the show of support, and apologies in advance for making this my only post in this thread, even if future posts are directed at me.

Aw, c'mon Rusty, come play with us for a while. That would be so dized.

Is the point of this thread to use announced hires as an indicator of the state of the job market? If so, isn't it more efficient just to look at the total number of announced positions (subtracting, of course, those which were canceled)?

We knew last October/November the market would be horrible. 2008-09 was my first year on the market, and, as bad as that was (~35% fewer jobs that year), this year I applied to half as many jobs as 08-09. I wasn't being selective; there were just fewer jobs to which I could apply. My impression is that other candidates applied for roughly half as many jobs as they did in 08-09, though that may vary depending on one's AOS.
