Crito: What Really Happened.

God, that was stupid and juvenile.

Mr. Zero said...

But in a good way, obviously.

Not at all. It was immature, offensive, and a waste of my time. It was a cheap shot at a historical figure that served no purpose but to get a smirk from types who get a laugh out of seeing someone mentioned in freshman year yell "Boner!"

Why did you post it? Did I miss something?

Mr. Zero said...

Why did you post it?

For all the reasons you mentioned.

Hey, does anyone know what's going on with Zombie, Jaded Dissertator, and Second Suitor? I really miss them!

When are they coming back?

Anonymous said...

Well, Zombie has a job now. I assume that means we will hear less from her. I for one would love to see more comics by Jaded, however.

We may well hear less from Zombie, but I thought it was suggested that we would continue to hear from her, with the blog dealing with a range of issues confronting young academics, from finding a job to dealing with one (and the tenure track) when you do. I sure hope so. (But there might be need, soon, for new blood amongst the bloggers.)

Ditto Ben's sentiment.

With all due respect, invite some more guest bloggers. Zero is well...Zero.

Personally I'd rather hear from philosophers young and old, male and female, who've been struggling on the job market for 5 plus years. People who have jobs just make me bitter and envious.

Anon 8:08: Been on the market to varying degrees since 2004, myself, if that makes you feel at all better (in the sense of commiseration, rather than the sense of enjoying my suffering). One of the things that has begun to disturb me is just how old I am. I suspect if I hit 40 without finding a tenure-track position (and that will not be as long from now as I would like) that I should probably officially give up. Not like how I throw my hands in the air every single year and declare that I'm giving up, but actually give up for real.

You have my sympathies, BunnyHugger.

How about it, Mr. Zero? What about inviting some of the rest of us to join the Smoker as guest bloggers? You could let a whole bunch of us write and moderate one or two guest posts each, and then winnow us down to three or so.

You know, kind of like 'House' in Season 4.

Here are my own credentials: I left a regular position at a SLAC (really a glorified CC) for ethical reasons last year, applied to 85 positions this year, and got nothing. This year, I'm giving it my last shot.

I have stories to tell and questions to ask about administrative and professional incompetence, job-related despair and depression, the job market, and ethical obligations to students.

If you're interested, just let me know in this thread and I'll send you an email.

Hi 40YO,

You could let a whole bunch of us write and moderate one or two guest posts each, and then winnow us down to three or so.

This is an interesting suggestion. However, there are some practical/procedural problems. As far as I can tell, the blogspot software will not allow me to assign moderation privileges for individual threads. And if we winnowed a large group down to a few, we would have to reject some people, and I, for one, would hate to have to do that.

However, if you've got something you'd like us to post, please email us at "philosophysmoker [at] gmail [dot] com" or to me directly at "zero.mrr [at] gmail [dot] com".

I would love to hear 40yo, noTT's story.

I am in my early 40s have tenure and think that working at my university is immoral, and I cannot seem to get a better job. I also cannot quite seem to pull the trigger to quit.

The university I work at wouldn't even classify as a glorified CC. If only we were a CC. We're just bad and stealing money from student who shouldn't be in college. And don't get me started on incompetent colleagues and administrators (incompetent holds wide scope here)!

Anon 1:49, is this what you need?

Thanks for the encouragement, Anon 1:49. I'll write Mr. Zero soon with my post. I also want to hear your stories. Maybe once my post is up, you could add a comment!

Thanks for the video, zero. I enjoy crude humor about boners and such before starting research. The rest of you should get the rigid designators out of your butts.
